IELTS Writing practice

Ready for real education

Know where your writing really stands. Write a real IELTS answer and get a band for each of the four criteria in about a minute, with every mistake corrected inside your own words. Then a teacher checks the score.

Wherever you are in the world, and wherever you are headed — study, work, or settling abroad. Practise on your phone, on your own time, as often as you like.

Intermediate

Build the foundations

You will work on sentence structure, verb forms and the everyday vocabulary an IELTS answer needs. Test technique comes later. First the English has to hold.

Advanced

Write with range and control

You will build longer sentences that stay accurate, choose words precisely, and structure an argument the way examiners expect. This is where band 6 becomes band 7.

How it works

  1. Choose a question and write

Pick a real Task 1 or Task 2 question from the bank, or paste one your teacher gave you. Start the timer to practise at test speed — 20 minutes for Task 1, 40 for Task 2.

  2. Get marked in about a minute

A band for each of the four criteria, the three things to fix first, every mistake corrected inside your own sentences, and stronger words for the ones you chose.

  3. Your teacher has the last word

Abdi reads your answer, changes any band the marking got wrong, and tells you what to work on before your next lesson. A person decides your score, not a machine.

What the feedback tells you

  • A band for all four criteria

Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy — scored separately, so you can see which one is holding your overall band down.

  • Corrections inside your own writing

Not a list of rules. Your sentence, the corrected version, and one short line saying why — shown where you wrote it.

  • Words you could have used instead

Stronger alternatives to the words you actually chose. Lexical Resource is about range you can use, not a list you memorised.

  • A score that does not flatter you

Marked slightly strictly, on purpose. Being told you are a band 7 when you are a 6 costs you a test fee and months of your life.

Who marks your work

Abdi Yousuf

Abdi Yousuf

Twenty years in humanitarian response, employment services and public policy across Somalia and Canada. Former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs & Disaster Management, and of Planning & International Cooperation. Now in Toronto.

My teaching started with an English Conversation Circle for new Canadians — people who needed enough English to get through a job interview, a doctor’s appointment, a day at work. Since then I have taught East African students both here and back home, many of them on their way into post-secondary study and out the other side into work.

It has always been grassroots teaching: find where a student actually is, and start there. That is what I want this to be. The marking is instant so you never wait — but a person has the last word, and I will give you as much one-to-one attention as I can.

This is new, and I am taking a small number of students to begin with — which means your work gets read properly rather than skimmed.

One thing to be clear about

The band scores here are an estimate to guide your practice. They are not an official IELTS result, and no practice tool can promise the score you will get on test day. What this can do is show you honestly where your writing stands today, and what to fix next.
